History of Sojourner Inn

The land that the Inn sets on was granted by the United States to Rodolphus D. Jennings on October 14, 1882. In the late 1880's the Dakota Hot Springs Company was formed and the land was platted into lots, blocks, streets and alleys. The streets and alleys were dedicated to the public for public highways and uses, but the Hot Springs Company reserved the rights to the exclusive use and control of the warm and cold water of a mineral nature flowing through and under the said streets and alleys. Minnekahta Avenue 1890s

In September of 1889 for the consideration of $150.00 Dakota Hot Springs Company conveyed lot 8 to Jane Burdette, a widow. Jane Burdette signed two promissory notes drawing the interest of 8% per annum until paid. One note for $37.50 was payable in one year, one note for $37.50 was payable in two years.

In October of 1890 Jane Burdette signed a mortgage to Fred Evans for real property on the land. This mortgage was for $1,200.00 at a rate of 10% per annum due in five years. In 1895 Jane Burdette was found in default of the mortgage and the property was sold at sheriffs sale on the steps of the Fall River County courthouse. Fred Evans paid $1,400.00 at the sheriffs sale for the property. The property changed hands a number of times during the next 10 years with Mr. Evans, his wife and Jane Burdette being involved.

On January 3, 1898 Mrs. Evans sold it to Jennie Brinkerhoof. Dr. Perry Nichols opened his cancer hospital in the building in March, 1905, and remained there until June, 1907. The old photo on the Home page was taken while Nichols was tenant.

    Testimonials
    FROM OUR GUESTS

...a belated thank you for a wonderful stay at the Sojourner Inn. It really capped off our trip to the Black Hills. The decor was not only well-designed, but it offered an eyeful of artistic delights. You picked the best of the genre to illustrate the rooms motif, taking it far beyound the normal luxury hotel room. Plus, the whole building has the stately aspect of a small town banker's mansion, perched near the town's river and just a minutes walk from a tiny but unique gourmet restaurant and an excellent coffee shop. The arts are obviously alive and well in Hot Springs, though the town still retains its rough-and-ready hill country roots.

Thank you Pat & Sandie for your kind hospitality. If all inns were as wonderful as yours, nobody would ever go home. We certainly didn't want to leave. Thanks for everything!

Had a great time. The waterfall began running during our stay; what a kool surprise. Your recommendation for Sheep Mountain in the Badlands was awesome. I would definitely recommend the Sojourner Inn for anyones visit to the Black Hills.
